The independent state of Papua New Guinea (PNG) occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and administers a number of the larger islands, including New Britain, New Ireland and Bougainville. The western half of the island -- the second largest in the world -- is Indonesia's Papua province.

Papua New Guinea maintains close military, economic and diplomatic ties with Australia. In 1975, it attained full independence from Australia.
