When 21 years of military rule ended in 1985, Brazil entered a difficult period as it transitioned to a democracy. After a lengthy drafting process, a new constitution was promulgated in October 1988. The Constitution established a presidential republic. Presidents are elected to four-year terms. They are limited to serving two consecutive terms, but can run again after they have not served a term in office.
