Aircraft Programs
Combat Aircraft. Slovakia formerly operated MiG-29s, of which it inherited 12 in its peaceful divorce from the Czech Republic in 1993, as well as an additional eight aircraft acquired under an October 1995 debt-reduction arrangement with Russia.
However, the aircraft proved expensive to operate, increasingly obsolete, and, most problematically, required support from Russia. The Air Force's lack of spare parts forced it to cannibalize unused MiG-29s.
