Country Info

The country known today as the Slovak Republic was joined with the regions of Bohemia and Moravia to form the nation of Czechoslovakia in 1918. The end of communist rule in 1989 foretold the breakup of the country; following the peaceful Velvet Revolution on January 1, 1993, Czechoslovakia dissolved into two successor states: the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Aligning itself toward the West, Slovakia joined both the NATO Alliance and the European Union in 2004.
