Active End Strength
During the 1980s, when Romania was under a communist dictatorship run by Nicolae Ceausescu, the military was a conscripted force totaling over 220,000.
Today, Romania's armed forces total 72,000, plus 55,000 reservists.
Conscription was eliminated at the beginning of 2007; however, it may be reinstated in the case of war.
