Background
Historically linked to the Swedish crown, Norway peacefully dissolved this union by declaring independence from Stockholm in 1905. Norway subsequently founded its own monarchy, naming Prince Karl of Denmark to be monarch; Prince Karl took the title King Håkon VII. Until World War II, Norway pursued a policy of neutrality.
