The premier defense project among all the Dutch military service branches is the F-16 fighter replacement program. The original plan was to order 85 aircraft for the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) at an estimated cost of EUR6.1 billion. That plan eventually shrank to 37 F-35s (two of which are test aircraft), although a future top-up order of nine additional F-35s was announced on October 8, 2019, thereby bringing the total order up to 46 units.
