The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was formed in 1949 by the 12 signatories to the North Atlantic Treaty. It now has a joint planning, coordination and command structure for 30 member nations:
Belgium (1949)
Bulgaria (2004)
Canada (1949)
Croatia (2009)
Czech Republic (1999)
Denmark (1949)
Estonia (2004)
NATO Military Committee
The Military Committee assists the North Atlantic Council on military matters. A group of senior military personnel works in a continuous session, under the direction of an elected chairman. (Iceland has a civilian representative.) The Military Committee makes recommendations to political authorities. The committee develops strategic concepts and prepares an assessment of the strengths and capabilities of risks to NATO's interests. The structure of the Military Committee is as follows:

NATO Civil Structure
The NATO military command is only one part of the organization. There are a number of civil coordinating committees that provide direction for the industrial, mobilization, civil defense and other military support activities of the NATO member states. The principal NATO civil coordinating committees fall under the International Staff (IS), as follows:
