Background
In October 1989, the Hungarian People's Republic was renamed the Republic of Hungary, heralding a change in government from a one-party communist regime to a multiparty democratic state. Hungary has historically been an integral part of Europe since achieving independence in 1000 A.D. A dual monarchy was established with Austria in 1867, within which Hungary had autonomy.
