OVERVIEW The Republic of Estonia (Eesti Babariigi) is bordered in the east by Russia, in the south by Latvia, in the north by the Gulf of Finland and in the west by the Baltic Sea. The modern nation of Estonia, a former territory of Czarist Russia, declared its independence on Feb. 24, 1918, but was overrun by German forces the next day. Two years later, with World War I over, Estonia signed the Treaty of Tartu with Soviet Russia. The Bolshevik government renounced in perpetuity...
