Background
The kingdom of Denmark was first organized as a unified state in the 10th century. In 1849, under the reign of King Frederik VII, it became a constitutional monarchy under the Constitution propagated that year. In 1953, there was a major constitutional overhaul, allowing for a unicameral legislature and a female chief of state.
Denmark also includes and is responsible for the self-governing administrative areas of Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
