Located in Central Europe, the landlocked country of Austria was once the seat of one of Europe's many empires, emerging in 1804 as the Empire of Austria just prior to the breakup of the Holy Roman Empire; it was expanded into a double monarchy with Hungary in 1867, forming the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
