OVERVIEW Tunisia is a North African state bordered in the west and southwest by Algeria, south and southeast by Libya and north and east by the Mediterranean Sea. A former French colony, Tunisia gained independence in 1956 and instituted a republican form of government in 1957. Multiparty elections were not held until 1981.
