As the supreme political and military authority in the country, the sultan of Oman is the final arbiter in all defense-related matters and is the titular commander in chief of the armed forces. Ranking behind the sultan is the deputy prime minister, followed by the minister of state for defense and the head of the Office of the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.
There is no conscription; the military is an all-volunteer force.
