The Moroccan government is marked by a mix of hereditary monarchy and gradually strengthening democratic institutions.  While predominantly Muslim neighboring nations in North Africa – notably Algeria and Egypt – have adopted republican forms of government, Morocco has preserved a hereditary monarchy dating back thousands of years invested with many authoritarian powers.
