The Dominican Republic, surrounded by the Caribbean Sea on three sides, is bordered by Haiti to the west. To the east, the Dominican Republic is separated from Puerto Rico by the Mona Passage, a strait linking the Caribbean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean.

The primary task of the Dominican military is territorial defense and border security. There is also a capacity for disaster relief and counternarcotic missions.
