Market Overview. The DPRK remains the world's most militaristic and isolated state. As of 2020, it spent about 22 percent of its gross domestic product on defense or military projects. Nearly one out of every four North Koreans serves in some military capacity. A large proportion of DPRK forces are deployed forward in attack positions within 40 miles (65 km) of the DMZ.
