Nepal is a mountainous landlocked nation bordered south, east and west by India and north by China (Tibet).

Nepal became a republic in 2008. Its official name is now the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal.

The primary role of Nepal's armed forces is protecting the nation's mountainous borders with India and China. It also assists in humanitarian relief, especially after earthquakes, and ensures domestic security after the end of the civil war in 2006.
