India has the third-largest military in the world, with its total armed forces numbering about 1,463,000. Service is voluntary.

Reservists total 1.155 million, primarily in the area of land troops (960,000). Army first-line reservists (300,000) are those whose full-time service occurred within a five-year period. Another 500,000 reservists have commitments lasting until 50 years of age.
