OVERVIEW Afghanistan is a land-locked nation bordered to the west by Iran; to the north by Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan; to the east by China; and to the south and east by Pakistan. The country is a patchwork of tribal groups and loyalties, with Pashtuns accounting for 42 percent of the population; Tajiks, 27 percent; Uzbeks, 9 percent; Hazaras, 9 percent; and minor ethnic groups (Aimaks, Turkmen, Baluchs and others), 13 percent.
