The Taliban assumed control of Afghanistan in mid-August 2021. The militant group had fought the Afghan government for around two decades since the U.S.-led ouster in 2001, culminating in a rapid offensive through the country's major population centers that saw only limited resistance from the Afghan military. Taliban fighters have taken control of the country's military bases and are now considered successors to the Afghan National Army.
