Togo has 37 tribes; 44 percent of the population speaks the Ewe language. There is also a significant Ewe-speaking minority group in neighboring Ghana. Togo has had aspirations of incorporating them into the country. The British-ruled western part of what was once called Togoland was incorporated into what is now Ghana.

Togo's primary security concerns are maintaining internal stability and combating piracy and maritime crime off its coast.
