OVERVIEW

The Republic of Senegal is a former French colony in northwestern Africa that has maintained amiable ties with the West. Senegal receives military support, training and equipment from France and the United States. Germany also provides support on a smaller scale.

DEFENSE ESTABLISHMENT

Senegal has a multiparty civilian government. The president maintains direct control of the armed forces and makes most all administrative and operational defense decisions.

CONSCRIPTION

Service in the Senegalese armed forces is by conscription, with a 24-month service requirement.
