The Republic of Niger has remained a multiparty democracy since the installation of a new government in December 1999.  The president of Niger is both chief of state and head of government.  Under the present constitution, the prime minister is appointed by the president, and they share some of the executive powers.  Niger has a unicameral National Assembly, with members elected for five-year terms under a majority system of representation.
