The Republic of Kenya was the administrative center of the British African empire until Kenyan independence in 1963. This came after Mau Mau revolts against British rule between 1952 and 1960. Perhaps 12,000 were killed in the fighting, according to official totals. Unofficial figures topped 20,000 deaths.
