Background. The Republique Gabonaise gained independence from France in August 1960. On the eve of its independence, Gabon was the only former African colony that had sought to become a department or an administrative district of France, but the request was turned down by (then) French President Charles de Gaulle.  

Executive. The current head of state, Ali Ben Bongo Ondimba, succeeded his father, El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondimba, as president in 2009....
