As the third year of the COVID pandemic nears its end, the virus shows no signs of slowing down. The death toll continues to rise, while increasing numbers of people experience serious or chronic illness following infection. As of Dec. 15, 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) tallied more than 646 million confirmed cases and 6.6 million deaths around the world due to COVID. These numbers are likely much less than the real figures due to the difficulties in confirming cases. Throughout the pandemic, governments have struggled to respond effectively, hampered by insufficient information about the virus and, in some cases, public opposition to basic public health measures.
