The Surveillance Towed Array Sonar System (SURTASS) is a long-range area surveillance sonar system developed for use by the United States Navy. The SURTASS is towed at slow-speeds (3 knots) by specialty tug-type surveillance and auxiliary ships designated T-AGOS (VICTORIOUS and IMPECCABLE classes). It is primarily designed for detection of submarines through the use of a hydrophone on a receiving array which picks up return echoes of submerged objects.
