The AN/BQR-19, nicknamed Top Hat, is an active, short-range, rapid-scanning submarine sonar for collision avoidance, navigation and other special applications, including upward-looking ice detection and mine detection.

Unlike many similar sonars, this system is mast-mounted; it weighs 1,000 pounds (454 kg).

status

Initial operational capability (IOC) was attained in 1970. The AN/BQR-19 is in service on board U.S. Navy OHIO-class and Converted Ohio-class submarines.
