The British Type 996 is a medium-range, general-purpose radar that is replacing the earlier Type 992 in British destroyers and in the INVINCIBLE-class VSTOL carriers. It was also fitted in the Type 23 DUKE-class frigates (also known as NORFOLK-class frigate). The radar for the destroyer and carrier update is designated Type 996/2; the radar in the DUKE class is Type 996/1. It is based on the AWS-5 .
