Mounted in a triple turret and carried only on the mothballed DES MOINES (CA-134) and SALEM (CA-139), the Mk 16 was the largest automatic naval gun ever made. It featured all-angle loading and used cased ammunition rather than the separate bag-and-shell loading common to such large guns.
Each DES MOINES-class cruiser carried three triple turrets.
The gun fired armor-piercing (AP) and high-capacity (HC) projectiles.
