Belarus is expected to recognize the breakaway Georgian republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states, reports RIA Novosti.
The Belarusian parliament was officially given recognition requests and a formal decision is expected "soon," said Pavel Borodin, the state secretary of the Russia-Belarus Union State.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has indicated that he would back parliament if it recognizes the breakaway regions.
