U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has welcomed a top Chinese general on a week-long visit to Washington and urged a lasting dialogue, Agence France-Presse reports.
Gen. Xu Caihou is the highest level Chinese military official to visit the U.S. since 2006. He is vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission.
Gates reportedly stressed the importance of Chinese-U.S. military relations and discussed the need to preserve a dialogue regardless of differences.
