The U.S. Army is closing the Newport Chemical Depot in western Indiana, reports the Terre Haute (Ind.) Tribune-Star.
For years, the depot produced explosives, heavy water used in the production of nuclear weapons and served as the sole site to produce VX nerve agent.
The facility was officially deactivated on June 18 after demonstrating the completion of all activities of destroying and removing VX needed to close the depot.
