Defense Secretary Robert Gates has authorized plans to send an additional 1,400 Marines to southern Afghanistan, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The Marine battalion may start arriving later this month and are expected to operate around Kandahar, said defense officials.
The move is intended to maintain security before a White House-mandated troop reduction begins this July, said officials.
