OVERVIEW

The Finnish navy (Merivoimat) has been assigned the tasks of surveillance and defense of the coastal and offshore island territories of Finland and protection of vital shipping lanes. Finnish surface combatants operate almost exclusively in the Gulf of Bothnia and the Gulf of Finland.
