The Algerian army is responsible for the defense of the nation's land borders with Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Niger, Mali, Mauritania and the Western Sahara. Algeria's interior is largely desert, requiring specially trained commando and paratroop units. Air support is provided by the air force, which also shares the ground-based air defense responsibility with the army.
