Background
Australia became a self-governing dominion within the British Empire in 1901. It is currently a member of the Commonwealth.
In 1998, the Australian Constitutional Convention voted to sever all ties with Great Britain. A national referendum to approve this decision and change Australia's status from a commonwealth headed by the British monarch to an independent republic was defeated in 1999.
