The South African Air Force (SAAF) is responsible for all military air operations, including maritime reconnaissance and close air support for the army.

The Air Force reserve is a part-time component of the air force. While there were plans for this component to take on a larger share of the service's functions, portions of the air reserve were grounded in 2015 by SAAF chief Lt. Gen. Zakes Msimang.

The SAAF is organized as follows:
