The Spanish VEC-M1 is derived from the BMR-600 armored personnel carrier. It has a different internal layout and is more heavily armored.

The VEC-M1 was designated the BMR-625 VEC (Vehiculo de Exploracion de Caballeria, or cavalry scout vehicle) 6 x 6 wheeled armored reconnaissance vehicle (ARV) when first introduced in the 1980s.

The BMR-625 VEC was redesignated as the VEC-M1 following an upgrade in the late 1990s. The modernization included a new 310-hp Scania DS9 diesel engine...
