The largest trial in Belgian history has begun in Brussels, reports Reuters.

Ten men are accused of involvement in Islamist suicide bombings in Brussels on March 22, 2016, that killed 32 people and injured more than 300. Three suicide bombers also died.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The trial is expected to last seven months, with around 1,000 people having registered to be represented.

Nine are accused of multiple murders and attempted murders in the context of terrorism and face potential life sentences. All have been charged with participating in a terrorist group.

One suspect is being tried in absentia because they are believed to have been killed in Syria.
