French energy firm TotalEnergies appears to be moving closer to resuming work at gas fields in northern Mozambique that had been halted following insurgent attacks, reports the Mozambique News Reports and Clippings (Milton Keynes, U.K.).
TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne has said repeatedly that work at the site in Cabo Delgado province would not resume until there was peace in the region, but that goal seems increasingly unlikely.
In the meantime, pressure has increased to generate gas to replace energy supplies from Russia.
Work could resume within a zone protected by Rwandan troops. On Dec. 1, President Paul Kagame said that the Rwandan contingent in Mozambique had increased from 1,000 to 2,500 troops.
On that same date, the European Union agreed to provide 20 million euros (US$21 million) for the first time to support Rwandan forces in Mozambique.
