A Congolese strike aircraft has violated Rwandan airspace during operations against rebels in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, provoking a formal protest from Kigali, reports Agence France-Presse.

On Monday, two Congolese Su-25 aircraft were launched against the M23 rebel group, which has recently made advances in the North Kivu province following the breakdown of a decade-old cease-fire.

At some point during the mission, one of the jets crossed into Rwandan airspace, the Rwandan government said. The Congolese government acknowledged the violation, emphasizing that it was unintentional.

Tensions are high between the neighbors after Kinshasa accused Rwanda of providing support to the M23 fighters. The Rwandan government has denied the allegation.
