Sarcos Technology and Robotics Corp. has announced that its Sarcos Defense subsidiary has received an Army contract for a robotic ammunition-handling system.
On Dec. 1, Sarcos received a $1 million Army Applications Laboratory, Army Futures Command to test its ammunition-handling solution.
The system features a dexterous robotic arm designed to be integrated with U.S. Army self-propelled howitzers, particularly the Extended-Range Cannon Artillery (ERCA).
The extensive testing will ensure the system meets Army requirements for shock and vibration absorption and performance in extreme temperature and weather conditions.
The system was designed to reduce injuries among soldiers from prolonged lifting of 100-pound (45-kg) rounds from a rack and putting them in the cannon loader, Sarcos said.
