The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) has exposed two Russian military intelligence agents, reports the Odessa Journal.
The agents belonged to the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (GRU). They had allegedly been gathering intelligence on the location and movements of Ukraine’s air defense units in Odesa.
The SSUsaid it exposed the agents at an early stage of their subversive activities and detained them before they could pass on critical classified information.
Both spies were Russian citizens who were sent to Ukraine in 2018 with a residence permit. Their contact was a former Russian special operations officer in Sevastopol who passed on the information to his intelligence supervisor, the agency said.
