The Moldovan government declared a member of the Russian Embassy staff persona non grata after debris from a Russian missile fired at Ukraine landed in a Moldovan village, reports Reuters.

Russia launched a strike on a Ukrainian dam on the Nistru river, which separates it from Moldova. After being shot down by a Ukrainian air defense system, debris from the projectile fell onto the small village of Naslavcea in northern Moldova, said Moldovan Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu.

He also warned that attacks on water infrastructure could put the region in danger of flooding.

Several windows in residential buildings were shattered, but no casualties were reported.

The Moldovan Foreign Ministry told the Russian ambassador that “missile attacks on a neighboring country continue to increase security risks, and the citizens of our country increasingly feel the devastating consequences of the war.”

The name and rank of the expelled embassy worker were not made public.

Moscow vowed to respond in kind.
