Kenyan police shot and killed a prominent Pakistani journalist in what they said was a case of “mistaken identity,” reports the BBC News.
According to an initial police report, on Sunday, Arshad Sharif was traveling in a car that police wrongly believed to have been stolen. Officers opened fire when the vehicle failed to stop at a roadblock in Kajiado county near Nairobi, the Kenyan capital.
Sharif, a well-known journalist in Pakistan who was critical of the military and a strong supporter of ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan, had complained of harassment by the Pakistani Federal Investigation Agency and left the country.
The Kenyan Independent Police Oversight Authority said it had sent a rapid response team to the site and would be investigating the shooting.
In Pakistan, journalists and rights groups called for a “transparent inquiry” into the killing, reported the Dawn (Karachi).
