Peruvian President Pedro Castillo has been removed from power after attempting to seize power, reports Bloomberg News.
On Wednesday, Castillo attempted to “temporarily” dissolve the Peruvian congress and announced “government through decrees."
During the speech, he also pledged to reorganize the judiciary and announced a curfew. He promised congressional elections within nine months and said the resulting congress would draft a new constitution.
Analysts said that the move was “completely illegal."
Peru's top court subsequently denounced Castillo and the military and police declined to participate in the coup. Government officials resigned en masse, reported the New York Times. The president was ousted from power and arrested.
Vice President Dina Boluarte succeeds Castillo. She is Peru's first female president.
