PM Announces Next Election Date, While Opposition Questions Fairness Of Votes

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced that Bangladesh will hold its next general election during the first week of January 2024, reports the Voice of America News.

Hasina, who was re-elected for a third term in 2018, made the announcement on Wednesday during a speech in Cox’s Bazar in southeastern Bangladesh.

The opposition alliance has accused the ruling party of falsifying the results of the 2018 election, calling the party “pro-government thugs” and saying they illegally stuffed the ballot boxes.

The United Nations and U.S. have called for a free and fair elections in Bangladesh.

A.K.M. Wahiduzzaman, a leader of the opposition BNP party in exile in Malaysia, said it was “difficult to believe” that the next election would be fair.
