The U.S. imposing a new round of sanctions on China and Russia, reports the Wall Street Journal.
The sanctions, slated to enter effect on Friday, are in response to Russia's deployment of Iranian drones in Ukraine, alleged human-rights abuses by both countries and Beijing’s support for illegal fishing in the Pacific, according to officials familiar with the matter.
The bulk of the sanctions are expected to be imposed under the Global Magnitsky Act, which allows the U.S. to target government and business officials accused of corruption and human-rights abuses.
The sanctions will freeze any assets owned within U.S. jurisdiction by the targets as well as prevent U.S. travel and business dealings.
Separately, the U.S. plans further measures against several Russian agencies linked to the transfer of Iranian military drones used in Ukraine and the Russian central election commission.
